The Athens Market
Varvakios Agora in Athens – the Athens central market, is my favorite marketplace in the world. Its chaotic, colorful, and full of life.
In my visits to the city, I love roaming the roofed alleys early in the morning, being a part of the marketplace, waking up to a new day.
I like watching the merchants unloading the fresh goods, the butchers cutting meat using terrifying knives and hanging the cuts on hooks, the fishmongers piling mountains of fish and seafood and sorting them like disciplined soldiers, the huge wheels of cheese and the pristine white cheeses, the abundance of olives and spices, the wild herbs still covered in dew and fresh fruit, the early rising restaurateurs starting the day's cooking and the first shoppers.
I take in the fragrances and listen to the sounds. I have yet to find a better way to experience Athens.
